If you answer "Yes" to any of the following statements regarding your child, he/she may benefit from weekly tutoring sessions:
During tutoring sessions, your child would be assessed to determine his particular areas of need and strengths. He will have one-on-one attention from a tutor with lessons focused on meeting him where he is and building from there. Each lesson will present a gradual reach beyond his stage of development to build your child's repertoire of strategies, skills and abilities.
During the initial session, the student is given quick assessments based on her age and grade level. These assessments would be used to determine her particular deficit areas and strengths. An instructional plan is then developed for the student, and subsequent lessons are designed to address those areas of need.
Each session is approximately 45 minutes. Sessions are held twice a week.
Each child develops at his/her own pace. While it is not possible to determine how many sessions it will take for the student to reach his/her goals, it is recommended that students be in tutoring sessions twice a week for at least four weeks. Parents may discontinue tutoring services at any time.
Guided reading is a method of support where a child is taught at his/her particular reading level using a simple process and specific strategies to help the child progress. Through this process, students build phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and writing skills.
During this initial session, the student is assessed in up to four areas of literacy. After this assessment, the information is analyzed, and an instructional plan is designed specifically for that student. This assessment session takes approximately 30-45 minutes and is done through a video conference.
During the consultation, which is scheduled separately, the student's assessment results are shared with the parents. At this time, parents are provided with information on 1) how to access the online platform that will be used throughout the sessions, 2) what materials will be needed for tutoring sessions, and 3) how to assist their child with reading at home. The consultation takes approximately 20-30 minutes and is done through a video conference.
During virtual tutoring sessions, the student works one-on-one with a tutor to improve in his/her areas of need. Students will have access to a wide variety of virtual reading material that they can access during sessions and outside of tutoring. Students are always taught on their particular instructional levels, and are gradually challenged in order to keep making progress. Students are encouraged and motivated as they reach milestones and various achievements.
Each session takes 45-60 minutes and is done through a video conference.
